Lady Cardinals ready for final meet of fall season

A little less than a month ago, the fall golf season got underway for the women's golf team. Now, as quickly as it began, the preliminary section of the women's golf schedule will end as it travels to Huntley, Illinois to compete in the Huskie Classic this Sunday and Monday.

The 36-hole invitational will start at 11 a.m. on both days on conference rival Northern Illinois' home course, Whisper Creek.

Head coach Shelley Sanders shed light on how well the team has performed this season. She said the freshman class has performed significantly well, and that juniors Lisa Robertson and Laura Adkins have also improved over the course of the season.

"Each year you try to bring in players that help to move your program along," Sanders said. "The freshmen have challenged the upper classmen a bit, and that has helped them improve their game. We have had a progression each year, and I look for that to continue."

Several schools will be competing in the event for the first time this season. Eastern Illinois, Division 3 Depauw, California Riverside, and Western Michigan, are among the teams whom are set to make inaugural appearances in the invite.

The Cardinals will try to improve upon their 4th-place finish from the Huskie Classic in 2001 this weekend.

Freshman Carmen Bodine will be looking to make her present known again, just a week following her third top finish for the Cardinals during the fall campaign. Her personal best of the season is a 13th-place finish at the Cardinal Classic.

"I came in just really wanting to play and get some experience," Bodine said. "It did not really matter to me if I was first or fifth. I just wanted to travel with the team and get some playing experience."

Bodine added that Western Michigan, which Ball State has competed against twice already, will be one of the favorites come Sunday.

As of press time, the coach had not decided who was going to make the trip to Huntley. Qualifying for the meet was set to continue through Friday to decide which players would make up the field.

"Everyone will have to get it together for us to win," Sanders said. "It is our last realistic chance to win a meet and to do as well as we can. Everyone seems to be playing well after four meets."//2+-í^+â-â-¦Iwgolfpreview 10.4DNEditorial//2SORT +â-ä2AUDT
