Field hockey loses in double overtime

In its first of three games this week that assistant coach Annette Payne called must-wins, the field hockey team lost at Ohio State Tuesday in double-overtime.

With the score tied at two, the teams played through two 15-minute sudden-death overtime periods. At the end of the second, Ohio State converted a penalty corner into a goal as time expired to win the game.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead into halftime on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Afton Hess and a goal by senior midfielder Monika Rhode, assisted by Hess.

The Buckeyes then scored 11 minutes into the second half to tie the game and eventually send it into overtime.

Last weekend, Ball State had only two shots on goal in two losses. Payne stressed that the team needed to attack more on offense and get more shots against Ohio State.

The Cardinals were able to do so, outshooting the Buckeyes 14-12 and holding a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. They were only able to score two goals on nine shots, however, a stat that the team wants to work on.

Hess's goal put her past senior forward Allison Haynes for the team lead with eight. Hess is also now the team leader with 18 total points.

With the loss, the team falls to 7-7 on the season and is still 3-3, in third place, in the MAC.

Heading into last Saturday's game against Central Michigan, Ball State was 7-4, ranked No. 24 in the country and coming off victories against No. 9 Louisville and No. 7 Kent State. The Cardinals have now lost three games in a row.

The loss to Ohio State was the team's third overtime game of the season, and its first overtime loss. Ball State beat Louisville 3-2 in overtime Oct. 5 on penalty shots and beat Kent State 4-3 Oct. 12.
