Alternative Route Safe Way to Avoid Flooded Areas

Three to four inches of rain soaked Muncie roadways Sunday evening, leaving drivers stranded.

Many drivers were stuck on Martin Street and Tillotson Avenue. University parking lots were knee deep in water in many areas. Riverside became a river and water extended to the Applied Technology building.

Assistant Superintendent of Sewer Maintenance Nancy Williams said Muncie's sewer systems were overwhelmed and could not handle such a sudden burst of rain.

"The sewers can't take it all when you get such an extreme amount of water so fast," Williams said.

David LePoris of Delaware County Emergency Management said that many Muncie roads, including McGalliard, were under eight inches of water.

Mike Koch of the National Weather Service said he did not expect flooding to recede until tomorrow morning.

Indiana is infamous for weather that can make operating a vehicle a scary experience. But it seems that motorists forget this as soon as the snow stops and the temperature rises.

The UPD responded to seven stranded vehicles yesterday.

Koch said one foot of flowing water is enough to sweep a car away.

So avoid flooded waterways and take an alternate route. Avoiding water is often as simple as driving one more block.

Drivers who do not have the option of alternate roads are faced with a decision: wait it out and drive through when floodwaters recede or attempt to drive through and flood the car. Either way motorists are left waiting it out. So be safe and choose the drier option.
