Editorial: Task force needs views on notification policy

Should parents be informed of violations?

It seems every week or so there is a different forum going on somewhere on campus about every topic under the sun.

"We need your opinion," or, "How do you feel about ... ?" are being posed all the time by various campus groups and organizations.

But now Student Government Association is holding a pair of student forums on a topic that might actually be cause for a larger turnout than at previous forums.

University officials are looking into implementing a policy that would give the university the OK to inform parents of students who have committed drug or alcohol violations.

Students can voice their opinions and pose questions to the administrative task force, headed by Brian Farber. The forum will be held at 4 p.m. on April 23 in Art and Journalism Building Room 175.

Another venue for student voice is the University Senate meeting at 4 p.m. April 25 in Teachers College Room 101.

Obviously, a Parental Notification Policy is a controversial topic. The last time we checked, most college students were older than 18 and legal adults - adults who can make their own decisions and be held accountable for their actions.

But that is just our opinion on the matter. Let university officials know how you feel.

Let them know you too are an adult.
