OPINION: State of State address important; tune in

O'Bannon will address state's budget woes at 7:30 tonight

Tonight at 7:30 Gov. Frank O'Bannon will present his State of the State address to the Indiana General Assembly and what he has to say is not predicted to be very pleasant.

Indiana's fiscal budget is in shambles and many of the state's lawmakers are looking at different ways to bring economic stability back to the Hoosier state. One, Rep. Ron Liggett, D-Redkey, is proposing a 10-cent increase to the gasoline tax. Another proposed solution is allowing dockside gambling at the state's riverboat casinos.

Indiana's education budget, however, is the one area that seems to be the biggest target for spending cuts. Tonight's address is of great importance to know how our state's top leader feels about these various issues.

The Daily News has always promoted student involvement with government issues and hopes the Ball State community will take keen interest in what is said. The address will be shown on statewide television and radio. Also, the broadcast is available on the Internet at www.IN.gov/gov.

This legislative session will determine the future of Indiana and everyone must be aware of its ongoings.
