Inflatable art introduced to stage

Company has been featured on 'Late Night with David Letterman'

The Fred Garbo Inflatable Theater Co. will bounce into Emens Auditorium on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Fred Garbo and Daielma Santos' critically acclaimed show, which features gigantic, inflatable props, dancing and innovative humor, premiered on Broadway in March 1998. Most recently Garbo has been featured on "Late Night with David Letterman."

Garbo, from Norway, Maine, was the acrobat inside Barkley the Dog on "Sesame Street" and was also featured in the musical "Barnum" as the chief juggler. He has toured Europe, Hong Kong and Australia with the Obie Award-winning "Foolsfire" with Bob Berky and Michael Moschen. He has performed with the New York Opera's "Turandot" and with the Brazilian dance company MOMIX.

Garbo got his start in show business when he was paid to perform a card trick in 1974. During the last 12 years, Garbo has worked with George York, artist and builder, to create and build more of the inflatable creations used in the show.

Santos was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and has trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London and at Michigan University. In Brazil she danced in Studios de Dancas and was the principal ballerina with the Opera Paulista II Dance Company. She has also worked with other companies, including the Cisne-Negro Ballet Company and the Portland Ballet Company, in Maine. Santos has shown her talent all over the world as a choreographer, dancer and prop comedian.

The two have been performing together since Garbo picked up Santos in 1992 while in Brazil. This two-person international show has been called creative, funny, visual, sensual and full of life.

More information about the show can be found at www.fredgarbo.com and ticket information can be obtained from the Emens Box Office at (765) 286-1539. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students of all ages.
