Flashes halt Cards winning streak

The Ball State gymnastics team's home winning streak came to an end this weekend at the hand of Mid-American Conference rival Kent State. The Cardinals lost at home Saturday for the first time since March 13, 1998, also at the hands of the Flashes.

Kent State took three of the four team events, and won all four individual titles. The only event the Cardinals won was the uneven bars. The final score was 193.075-192.525.

"I am happy to start the season with the 192.525 team score," Ball State coach Mary Roth said. "Kent State is a great team to open against."

The Flashes came to Muncie as the defending MAC champions.

For Ball State, senior Renee Planck earned runner-up honors in the bars, scoring a 9.8. Junior Kim Cromer matched Planck's effort by placing second in the beam with a score of 9.75.

Roth said the only disappointment for the Cardinals was the floor exercise. "We are much better in that event than we showed tonight," she said. "Considering the injuries we are hampered with right now, I think we stepped up pretty well."

Ball State had won its last 20 home meets before this weekend.
