IU's coach Davis beyond disrespectful, arrogant

I have never been an IU fan.

And, after what I witnessed Saturday, I never will be an IU fan.

Not because we lost; teams lose. I am not oblivious to that.

I understand that everyone must lose. Even the mighty powerful No. 1 Duke will meet its match soon or later.

It's not the fact that we lost to Indiana by a 13-point margin, a margin that should have been a lot closer.

I'm not even really that mad that the officiating at Assembly Hall is a disgrace to the word officiating. I mean yes, it was horrid, and yes, the constant whining of the IU fans persuaded the officials to call the game blind to IU's mistakes, but it wasn't really all that unexpected.

So what is making me mad exactly?

Mike Davis.

Mike Davis and his stupid, uncalled for, first grade-like, ridiculous comments for which he felt the need to make after Saturday's game.

First for the ridiculous, uncalled for, first grade-like comments.

"It blew my mind that people picked Ball State over us. I couldn't believe it," Davis said.

"It's really like a slap in our face to say Ball State would come here and beat us at home."

Davis later went on to say he "thought it was funny" that Ball State was favored by some and that he felt IU was getting "no respect in their own gym."

Let me tell you something, Mr. Davis, you are above no one. On top of that IU basketball is above no one.

What need was there for such insulting comments anyway?

IU had just beaten Ball State. You had made your point. You came out, shut down Petie Jackson and Theron Smith and made your point. You played better and won the game. Period.

It should have stopped there.

The post game interviews should have consisted of comments like those that came from Ball State coach Tim Buckley.

"I tip my hat to Indiana. I thought they played an excellent basketball game, and I think they have a very fine team," Buckley said respectfully.

Davis proved only one thing by making the comments he did - he's filling the General's shoes well, or at least trying.

Trying would probably be the best way to put it.

A new coach should come with a new way of doing things. There is no need whatsoever to act so arrogant.

You didn't impress me, and I know for a fact you didn't impress several other members of the media in that room. On top of that, you put forth a bad face for Indiana University - a disrespectful face.

Get off your pedestal, or perhaps you'll start throwing into fit into the whole IU way of thinking, and show some respect for your opponent.

Secondly, you made some pretty stupid, uneducated comments as well.

At one point, when you were ranting and raving about getting no respect, you mentioned that you made the trip to North Carolina and beat the Tarheels by 13 points.

You want a cookie?

Just in case you forgot, Ball State downed UCLA by 18. A UCLA team that was ranked No. 3 in the nation compared to a North Carolina team that has since acquired a record of only 1-4.

Good job coach!

You beat someone who used to be good, a team that is no longer.

You want respect for defeating a team that has since lost four games, and you wont give respect to a team that beat the No. 3 team.

Not only is your judgment a little off, but realize that there are some coaches out there who understand what the UCLA game actually meant. Interestingly enough, as funny as you thought it was, we were favored. Ball State fell only three spots in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll after Saturday's loss.

And yes, IU entered the poll, but under Ball State. New rankings list Ball State at No. 23 and IU at No. 24.

But hey, why be surprised by the lame comments from coach Davis. There was no respect for Ball State in that building to begin with.

Even on the floor.

Before the game a referee came up to a fellow Daily News staffer and asked what our coach's name is.

Yeah, a great deal of respect there, isn't there?

Usually I close with, or at least try to, something witty - something to think about.

There is, however, nothing to think about IU's coach Mike Davis. He doesn't deserve the time and effort it takes to think.
