As the days grow colder, one group at Ball State has a goal -- to share its love of music with people in a warm, tropical environment.
Ball State's 44-member chamber choir is working to raise money for its tour to Hawaii and will attempt to accomplish this by putting on two concerts on Nov. 16 and 17 at 7 p.m.
"It's not just a place to go to the beach," said Doug Amman, professor in the School of Music. "There's a whole separate culture."
This fundraiser, will reflect the destination of the group in the program's theme "Hawaiian Paradise." Refreshments and drinks will be served with as part of the fundraiser.
The Chamber Choir, comprised of freshmen through graduate students, is going to give its interpretation of not only the Hawaiian culture, but the folk music and tunes of other cultures as well.
"This group is a very fine ensemble," Amman said, "one of the premiere ensembles in the School of Music."
This performance consists of a large portion devoted to solo pieces and then another segment performed by the Chamber Choir, according to Amman.
Amman said he will be conducting the larger pieces, but five graduate students and one undergraduate student will also conduct during the concert.
Students Kristen Fischmer, Karen Meiring, Bogdan Minut, Tsui-Ping Peng and Marco Rankin are among those conducting.
Mark Boyle will conduct a short piece which the choir will sing in Hawaiian. Amman said Boyle at one time served in the Navy before coming to Ball State. Boyle's knowledge of the culture is why he is going to conduct the piece, Amman said.
But other students will feature other folk songs from other parts of the world.
"In addition to the musicals, we have a graduate student from Taiwan who is going to sing a Chinese folk song," Amman said.
Piano and trombone solos will be performed as well as larger choir pieces from such musicals as "Guys and Dolls" and "West Side Story."
Amman said the Chamber Choir has put on this fundraiser for the last 10 years.
The Nov. 16 performance will take place at the High Street Methodist Church in downtown Muncie, and the Nov. 17 performance will be at the Alumni Center near the football stadium.
Tickets for both concerts are $15 for students and $20 for adults. Pairs of tickets can be purchased for $35, and all tickets must be purchased in advance.
