Following the life of teenager Carrie White, the Muncie Civic Theatre presents Stephen King's "Carrie: The Rock Musical." Set in the 1980's, Carrie, portrayed by Alex Oeschel, a freshman acting major, is a special girl facing the trials of high school, including bullying. When the taunts and jeers become too much, Carrie's power of telekinesis emerges, wreaking havoc at the prom.

“[It's] a great opportunity for me since I am a freshman. This is my hardest role because she is very introverted and behaves differently towards others in high school and with her mother,” Oeschel said.

With the original Broadway cast having 32 members, Muncie Civic's contains 16, all of which come from Ball State University.

Director Tracie Chessum asked her cast to think about being bullied or how it felt to bully someone else and transfer that to the stage.

"It's hard to put your own story onstage because it's about you and it's hard to detach yourself," Chessum said. "Trying to connect them to real life onstage was a unique challenge."

Bullying in schools is an ongoing epidemic, whether it be hazing, verbal or physical abuse, amongst others.

“I was personally drawn to 'Carrie' because it’s a classic tale of bullying, which touches people, and [it] doesn’t get discussed in public," Todd Sandman, executive director, said. "This will be an educational play for the community."
