FOOTBALL: Ball State vs. Akron quarter updates

4th quarter

At the end of the fourth quarter, Ball State defeats Akron 35-21. 

Secor hit another field goal to open the fourth quarter, cutting the Akron lead to 21-19. Akron took over after the kickoff on its own 25. The Zips went three and out, and after the punt Ball State took over on its own 29. Ball State couldn’t take advantage and punted and Akron muffed the punt, recovered by Ball State on the Akron 29.

Milas hit Curry to the Akron 5 down the seam and then kept it himself for a five-yard touchdown run. They failed on the two point conversion and Ball State led 25-21.

Akron began its next drive on its own 25. Hundley picked up a first down with a run up the middle, and Woodson picked up another after making two Ball State defenders miss. On third and long, a deep pass fell incomplete and the punt was blocked, Ball State taking over on the Akron 26.

Williams caught a Milas pass to the Akron 13, and they teamed up again to gain another first down at the three. Edwards ran in from three yards out for a 32-21 lead after the extra point.

After the kickoff, Akron started on its own 25. Tyree Holder picked off Woodson and returned it to the Akron six. 

After five straight runs, Secor hit another field goal, pushing Ball State's lead to 35-21. 

Akron started its drive at the 25 after a touchback, and drove downfield to Ball State's 38 before Patterson intercepted Woodson's pass.

Milas took a knee and the clock expired.  

3rd quarter

At the end of the third quarter, Ball State trails Akron 21-16.

Akron took the ball to start the second half on its own 25. Williams picked up a first down on a toss from Woodson, but the drive fell apart and Ball State took over on its own 20 after the punt.

Edwards rumbled to the Akron 43 and Milas found Williams for another first down to the 28. Secor’s kick was wide right and Akron maintained its 21-13 lead.

Ben Ingle intercepted Woodson and was brought down on the Akron 33. Runs from Milas and Edwards set up a third and nine, Edwards caught a screen for 13 yards and a first down. Facing fourth and short, Milas ran a quarterback sneak for a first down, setting up first and goal. The team couldn’t pick up a touchdown and Secor hit a field goal, cutting Akron’s lead to 21-16.

Akron started its next drive at its own 28. The team picked up a first down and facing fourth and one later, Grice converted with a two-yard gain. Woodson was picked off by Zack Ryan and returned it to the Akron 38. Facing third and six, Milas found Edwards for a few two yards and the clock expired.

2nd quarter

At halftime, Ball State trails Akron 21-13.

Ball State forced a punt after three more plays and took over on its own 22-yard line. Two runs from Milas and one from Teddy Williamson picked up a first down. Edwards picked up two more first downs and moved the ball to the Akron 45. Milas hit Corey Lacanaria for another first down on third and three, and Edwards rumbled to the Akron 13. After a few penalties and facing first and goal from the five, Edwards ran for a gain of two, Milas missed Sam Brunner and Lacanaria. Secor’s field goal was good, and Ball State trailed Akron 14-6.

Akron returned the kickoff to its own 33. Hundley took the ball on a run to the Ball State 39. Woodson took off for a gain of nine, then completed a pass to the Ball State 5. Hundley rushed for another touchdown and after the extra point, Akron led Ball State 21-6.

Eric Patterson took the kickoff to the Ball State 37. Milas pump faked and found Williams to the Akron 18. Mabon took a reverse to the end zone and after the extra point, Ball State trailed 21-13.

Akron took over on its own 25 after a touchback. After a quick three and out, the Zips punted and Ball State took over on its own 11. 

Edwards ran to the Ball State 31 and Milas found Williams to the Akron 49. A roughing the passer penalty gave Ball State the ball on the Akron 34, but Secor missed a field goal as the clock expired.

1st quarter

At the end of the first quarter, Ball State trails Akron 14-3.

Ball State received the opening kickoff and starts its first drive off on its own 25-yard line. Quarterback Jack Milas found receiver KeVonn Mabon for six yards on the first play, then found Jordan Williams to midfield. Running back Jahwan Edwards picked up 17 yards on a pass from Milas, but the drive fell apart. Kicker Scott Secor hit a field goal and Ball State took a 3-0 lead with 12:12 left in the first quarter.

Akron started its first drive off on its own 35-yard line after Kyle Schmidt’s kickoff rolled out of bounds. Quarterback Tommy Woodson picked up a first down on a pass into Ball State territory to a diving L.T. Smith. He then hit Anthony Ritossa for a touchdown and after the extra point, Akron led 7-3.

The Cardinals started their next drive off on their own 25-yard line. The drive quickly stalled and the team punted, Akron taking over on its own 32-yard line. Woodson found a receiver for 16 yards and took the ball to the Akron 48, then hit Tyler Williams to move to the Ball State 35. Facing a third and one from the Ball State 14, Ball State stopped a running play short before Cody Grice picked up a first down on fourth and short. Conor Hundley rumbled in from 13 yards away for the touchdown and after the extra point, Akron led 14-3. With 3:03 left in the first quarter.

Mabon was upended at the Ball State 25 on the next kickoff. Ball State faced a third and three after consecutive runs from Edwards, but Milas overthrew Dylan Curry and Ball State was forced to punt. Akron took over on its own 23, and quickly picked up a first down to end the quarter.
