In sports, there’s the saying ‘defense wins championships,’ whether it is true or not, Ball State is testing the theory. Although they haven’t reached the final mark, their continued stout defensive performances have led them to have a successful season so far.

One constant that has been surrounding the Cardinals this season is playing from start to finish. Playing in close games has been consistent throughout the entire season. Wednesday’s conference tilt against Toledo (11-15, 6-9 MAC) proved to be no different. Ball State Women’s Basketball (19-8, 11-4 MAC) defeated the Rockets 66-60 in a physical game from start to finish.

With a first-round bye in the Mid-American Conference up for grabs and just three games left, Ball State Men’s Basketball (16-12, 9-6 MAC) needed a win. The Cardinals took down Western Michigan (11-17, 4-11) 71-61 to stay in a tie with Buffalo as the fourth seed.

Through the Cardinals' last five games, the winner hasn't been decided in the final seconds nor have they dominated the entire game. Only a few of Ball State's games have come down to the final possession, but these past five games its been the space between the last five and two minutes where the game has been decided.

Ball State Women’s Basketball (18-7, 10-3 MAC) has shown to be nearly unstoppable at home. The Cardinals only have one flaw so far in Worthen Arena, and that came from out-of-conference play. Beating Northern Illinois (8-16, 4-9 MAC) 97-89 Wednesday, Ball State remains undefeated against Mid-American Conference opponents at Worthen Arena.

Ball State Men’s Basketball (14-12, 7-6 MAC) held Buffalo (17-9, 8-5 MAC) to 0-10 from three to start the game and led by as many as 10 in the first half. The game was tied at 29 at the half, but the Bulls stormed passed the Cardinals in the second half, outscoring Ball State 43-30 and ultimately winning 72-59.

At the 4:14 mark of the game, Ball State trailed 70-50. When the crowd was at its quietest, the Cardinals sparked some magic. Redshirt freshman guard Jarron Coleman scored 10 of his 17 points in those final four minutes of the game. Ball State cut its 20-point deficit to three, but the Falcons ultimately held the Cardinals off with free throws, defeating them 77-71.
