From textbook costs to conversations on diversity, university governance addresses a range of issues on campus.

Student Government Association (SGA) advisor Jim Hague urged senators and students to be involved in university governance at the SGA meeting Wednesday.

University governance allows students to collaborate with faculty on legislation that impacts campus, he said. Students can choose to participate in one of more than 55 seats in 25 committees available.

“For a long time our student voice in the governance system is what I’ll say, a little lacking,” Hague said. “SGA and the senate here has a responsibility of appointing individuals to those university governance committees.”

Students can participate in committees focused on topics such as undergraduate research or performing arts, Hague said.

“Our university governance system … truly allows an honest, open door,” Hague said. “[A] transparent opportunity for all university community members, faculty, staff and students to come together around a number of topics.”

There is a need for more student involvement in university governance, SGA president Isaac Mitchell said.

“It’s an opportunity for us to actually sit down with faculty and discuss different things in different committees,” Mitchell said. “There’s a lot of seats that need to be filled yesterday.”

If students are interested in participating, email sga@bsu.edu.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, secretary Kyleigh Snavely said a football shuttle will carry students to the football game Saturday.

Early this semester, the shuttle was established as a part of the executive slate’s platform points.

The shuttle will run from 11 a.m. till the end of the game. Students can be picked up at North Shelter, Studebaker East, the corner of New York Avenue and Riverside Avenue and the Student Center.
