BSU Offers Fitness Class for Faculty and Staff

The Ball State Rec Center is offering the Movement Foundations for faculty and staff that’s helping more people fit their workouts into already busy schedules.

Whereas most fitness classes are focused on reps or intensity, this class is different. Instructor, Matt Miller, is taking a more wholistic approach to teaching.

“Movement Foundations works so well in this room because the class is about learning basic movement patterns – learning how to walk or transport, how to maintain posture, how to push, pull, squat, hinge and lunge. It’s not that we’re going to train any muscle group in particular, it’s more about how to move throughout your life,” Miller said.

Using TRX Straps, body weight and free weights, students are able to target these specific movement patterns.

Focusing on the whole body is what’s allowed Carolyn Vann to continue staying active. She has already had four knee surgeries and is set to have her fifth in September. However, she is still able to exercise and move around freely because of the Movement Foundations class.

“It’s made my life better. I can move around and not crash,” Vann said.

The class is held just after noon and is only 45 minutes long. Because of this, participants don’t even have to change out of their work clothes. Since the exercises are low intensity and easy to personalize, students are able to dictate how much or how little they push something.

While Vann is a veteran of the class, Brenda Clark just finished her first week. She’s hoping to improve her overall agility and stay ahead of family genes with her workout.

“I have an older sister who’s in a nursing home, and right now she can’t even go to the restroom by herself. I don’t really want to end up like my sister. I want to stay healthy and active as long as possible,” Clark said.

While registration for the current session is closed right now, the class runs in five-week sessions. The next session will run from October 15th – November 16th. Interested faculty and staff can register here with their BSU username and password.
