Ball State University's Office of Institutional Diversity announced Friday the university received the 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award.

The award was presented by INSIGHT Into Diversity, a diversity publication for higher education that is more than 40 years old.

The award measures a college's level of commitment and achievement dedicated toward broadening diversity and inclusion on its campus. The criteria the magazine examines are based off of the university's initiatives, programs and outreach in terms of student recruitment, retention and completion and hiring practices for faculty and staff.

Indiana University-Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis also won HEED awards.
