Ball State women’s swimming and diving's 2017-2018 season will officially begin on Saturday, Oct. 21 as the team travels to West Lafayette for its first dual meet against Indiana Intercollegiate.

Head coach Kristy Patterson reflects positively on the team following their pre-season scrimmage earlier this month.

“I was really happy with their performance overall,” Patterson said. “They showed a lot more depth at this time of the year than what we had last year.”

The White team’s marginal victory over the Red team is a testament to the competitive potential of the team as a whole. This “depth” will be especially noticeable in the medley relays. The A and B relays are already within one second of each other compared to their three second separation from last season.

In addition, much of the team is made up of younger swimmers so a large portion of the team’s potential will be returning next season as well.

Ball State women’s swimming and diving welcomes three new swimmers (Cailin Merck, Kayla Monar, and Audrey Schank) and one new diver (Caitlin Locante) to the team this season.

One returning swimmer, sophomore Elizabeth Graham, looks forward to working on her personal goals in addition to the team’s goals. While she plans to swim the 500, 1000 and 1650 yard freestyle this season, she will be focusing on her pace 50s to improve her mile time.

“I feel like we are really motivated this year and we mesh very well together,” Graham said.

Graham is happy to have the four new Cardinals on the team and is looking forward to the 2017-2018 season and competing against teams in the Mid-American Conference.

Similarly, Coach Patterson is looking forward to seeing the team improve and reach their monthly goals.

“The fact that we are starting off in a good spot gives us good promise for the season,” Patterson said. “We’re ready to get the season started.”
