Indiana University releases new policy regarding student athletes and sexual assault

According to bsu.edu, students who have been a victim of sexual assault should contact a victim advocate at 765-285-7844, emergency dispatch at 911 or University Police Department at 765-285-1111.

In 2015, Indiana University reported 29 on-campus rapes and 10 non-campus rapes. In the same year, Ball State reported 18 on-campus rapes and eight off-campus rapes.

IU recently announced the implementation of a new policy. As of April 12, incoming athletes with a history of sexual assault will no longer be admitted to the university.

The policy prohibits “any prospective student athlete — whether a transfer student, incoming freshman, or other status — who has been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a felony involving sexual violence.”

It goes on to define sexual violence as dating, sexual or domestic violence, rape or sexual assault.

Not only will these students be prohibited, the policy reiterates that students will be subject to criminal background changes and internet searches as stated in the Statement Of Principles on the Conduct of Participants in Student Athletic Programs. The statement was last revised in October 2015.

The policy was created by Athletic Director Fred Glass, and it engaged a collaborative effort between the university’s Title IX Coordinator, University General Counsel and University Faculty Athletics Representative.

While Ball State doesn’t currently have a similar policy in place, university spokesperson Joan Todd said administrators are aware of IU's new ruling.

“We’re aware of IU’s new policy and have not yet had a chance to discuss all of the aspects,” Todd said in an email. “However, we always are looking for ways to serve our students, promote appropriate behaviors and put the safety and security of our university community first.”
