Daily News wins 37 awards at 2017 ICPA convention

The Daily News brought home 37 awards at the 2017 Indiana Collegiate Press Association convention Saturday.

The ICPA consists of more than 40 collegiate publications ranging from newspapers, yearbooks, online publications, news magazines and literary magazines. 

The Daily News finished second overall in both the online and newspaper Division l categories, with the Indiana Daily Student taking first in each.

Out of the 37 total awards won by the staff, 10 were first place, 13 were second and 14 were third.

In the print Newspaper Division l competition, which includes college newspapers published three or more times a week, the Daily News scored 58 total points.

The Daily News Staff, which is categorized by work done from multiple staff members, won three first place awards which included the best single issue, “541 Days,” best special issue, “Special Election Issue” and best themed issue, “Family Weekend.”

Other first place awards from staff members included: best illustration “Indiana pay gap” from photo editor Grace Ramey and designer Olivia White, best news photo “Not our president” by photographer Stephanie Amador, best special section front/cover “Family Day cover” by cartoonist Mikey Higgins, best sports feature story “Franko’s House” by managing editor Robby General and best informational graphic “420 beginnings” from alumna Ashley Downing.

In the online competition, the Daily News Staff took first place in best Facebook page and second for best overall website and best use of Twitter.

Daily News staffer Tyson Bird and editor-in-chief Breanna Daugherty finished in second place in best slideshow and best special presentation while Bradley Dean Jones took third place for best animation/interactive graphic.
