Muncie kids will ‘bee’ ready to spell

MUNCIE, Ind.---The Boys and Girls Club of Muncie’s best elementary and middle school spellers matched off Friday evening.

Ambre’a Vance, a fourth-grader at Sutton Elementary School, took first place.

Her championship-winning word was “prevented.”

The competition lasted 12 rounds.

Last year, Indiana Public Broadcasting made a decision to incorporate spelling bee competitions within the community. WIPB partnered with Muncie Boys & Girls Club and Motivate Our Minds to create a spelling bee club called Bee Great.

Michelle Kinsey, community engagement coordinator for WIPB, meets with the kids weekly.

“The whole idea is to get kids excited about spelling and get them excited about speaking,” Kinsey said.

The club practices games, definition of words, and performs mock spelling bees to ultimately reach a higher goal.

“What we love to see is these students on stage at our big regional bee,” Kinsey said.

Students from more than 50 local elementary and middle schools will compete in the second WIPB Spelling Bee, set for 9 a.m. in Sursa Performance Hall at Ball State University.
