Excitement was evident on the faces of the winners. When Johnson was crowned, it was a moment even she couldn't believe.

“It was just an honor to be nominated," Johnson said.

Her face was lit up as several people walked up to congratulate her.

“As soon as they announced my name, I literally like covered up my face because I was almost emotional,” she said.

Homecoming events kicked off on Oct. 17 with Ball State's annual Homecoming Village.

After signing a waiver, students were able to participate in games such as Dance Dance Revolution or human Hungry Hungry Hippos. Other games available were giant red Solo cup pong and roller skating. Along with games, there was live music, henna and free food, as well as food trucks.

The drum line from the Ball State band made a performance, as well as the Code Red Dance Team and the Ball State cheerleaders. The football also made an appearance on stage to speak with the crowd.

Freshman telecommunications major Lizzy Bernard spent the event laughing and dancing with friends. But there was one performance that stuck out to her.

“I really liked the drum line,”  Bernard said, crediting their performance as the reason she came.

This year, the Homecoming Village festivities had something new. The 2016 Homecoming court, and winners, for faculty and students were announced at the event, unlike years prior.

Events will be held on campus throughout the week, such as a blood drive, talent search, campus dinner and Air Jam. Find a full schedule here
