1. “You’re described as the therapist of your group of friends.” – Lauren Kalvaitis, sophomore

Your friends naturally turn to you for help with their problems — they figure because it's your future career, they might as well take advantage of your skills while it's free.

2. “You’re passionate about connecting people to resources.” – Morgan Hicks, senior

A big part of social work is connecting people to the right resources so they can be helped appropriately. Social work majors learn to get good at doing this before entering the workforce.

3. “You get to go on field trips to places like horseback riding therapy camps.” – Kalvaitis

Social work majors have to have volunteer experience. It’s a good way to learn about the places where they might eventually work.

4. “You have a giving personality.”  Emily Moore, junior

Social work requires deep compassion for individuals. Much of social work involves helping people through tough times and difficult situations.

5. “You spend a lot of time worrying about the community around you.” – Hicks

Social work majors don’t think about themselves a lot. They can get swept up in the problems of people around them, thinking about the health of their community rather than themselves.
