VIDEO: Muncie salt truck caught fire, destroyed

The Muncie Street Department is without one of its brand new salt trucks. Street Superintendent Duke Campbell said the 2016 Western Star truck, valued at $140,000, caught fire in the garage Tuesday morning.

Campbell said the truck was not running and no one was near it when smoke and flames started pouring from the hood. A mechanic working in the garage heard a "pop" come from the truck before they grabbed fire extinguishers to put the fire out. Muncie firefighters arrived on scene putting out the blaze before it could spread to nearby vehicles, equipment and chemicals.

Donnie Simpson with the Muncie Street Department said the fire damage was limited to the truck. The garage sustained flooding and smoke damage.

Simpson told NewsLink Indiana that insurance will pay for the cost and replacement of the truck. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
