Roundup of Ball State Black History Month events

February is Black History Month, and Ball State hosts numerous events for students to attend to learn more about the African-American culture.

These activities range from tours to free food and will take place throughout the month.

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center- Feb. 6 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Hosted by Black Student Association, this tour will take students around Cincinnati, Ohio, highlighting the most important aspects of Black history found around the city. The tour highlights slavery and will include the Underground Railroad, the Abolitionist Movement and current struggles for freedom. Students should arrive by 9:30 a.m. at the Multicultural Center.

Black Minds Matter – Feb. 8 from 7 - 8 p.m. in Whitinger Building, Room 141

Black Student Association will facilitate a discussion about issues affecting the black community. The town hall style meeting will cover the economy and education, as well as current events.

Black History Month Jeopardy – Feb. 9 from 7:45 - 9:45 p.m. in the Park Hall Lobby

Come to Park Hall to learn about black history, play a classic trivia game and potentially win Park Passes.

"Bamboozled" – Feb. 11 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. in the Educational Technology and Resources Collection Meeting Room 2

Students who attend this event at Bracken Library will have the chance to watch the satirical movie, "Bamboozled," by director Spike Lee. The movie is presented by Black Student Association.

Evolution of Rap & Hip-Hop Social – Feb. 15 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Art and Journalism Building, Room 175

Black Student Association and Men and Women of Color will collaborate to inform the Ball State community about one of the biggest aspects from the Black community: rap and hip-hop.

What is Love – Feb. 16 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Teacher’s College, Room 121

Student attendees will discuss the different aspects of love in the black community. This includes romantic love, as well as familial and friendly love. Black Student Association will host this event.

Soul Food Fest – Feb. 16 from 7 - 9 p.m. in Park Hall Multipurpose Room

The promise of free food should be attractive to Ball State students, who can learn more about the importance of soul food in America. Black Student Association will host this event.

Under The Rug – Feb. 23 from 6 - 7 p.m. in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Room 303

This event, hosted by Black Student Association, is aimed at examining things that are usually not discussed in the black community, including homosexuality, mental illness and sexual abuse.

Black Experiences Video – Feb. 29 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in Pruis Hall

Black Student Association will host this final event of Black history month, presenting a video about the black experience from a student’s point of view.
