New study analyzes gamer motives

<p></p>

Have you ever wondered why you game? In a recent study run by Quantic Foundry, researchers split their 12 main reasons that gamers play into six categories. They’ve found that over time, the alluring competition of an intense game of Rocket League doesn’t last as long as the complex strategy of a game like chess.

While male gamers overall have much more motivation to game, female interest overlaps those of males past age 50 for competition motivation. The majority of gamers lie in the 35+ region, and are only getting older as time goes on. For more interesting data on gamers in general, be sure to read the Entertainment Software Association pamphlet about gaming demographics.

Out of the six categories that researchers have been measuring for a year or so thus far, the majority of them elaborate on specific needs that the games fulfill in our escapist tendencies in one way or another when we play them. You can take the survey for yourself on Quantic Foundry's website. I found that my chart leans toward Action and Social gaming.
