The university has continued to show interest in the participation of the Federal Communications Commission spectrum auction.

Ball State could make up to $277 million by selling its broadcast rights to air WIPB. Since September, the university has been engaged in the preliminary process to decide how it wants to proceed.

“You can’t say 'I don’t believe anything; I’m not a part of it,'” said Vice President for Information Technology Phil Repp. “You gotta say, 'Well, let us get engaged and see if anything [is] beneficial to us and listen.'”

March 29 is the deadline for the university to join the auction. Even after the deadline, Ball State has the option to drop out at any time.

“[The] rules are so loose it gives us [that ability],” Repp said. ”Why not stay in and do various stages to make sure we know?”

Full participation in the auction would be made in the best interest of the university, according to a statement made by Repp in September.
