The Ball State men’s basketball team etched their first win of the season on Monday night, 73-56 over Eastern Illinois, breaking an 18-game losing streak which crossed over from last season.

“It was a good ‘ole team win,” head coach James Whitford said. “By that, I mean we got great contributions off the bench from a lot of guys.”

Senior forward, Bo Calhoun came off the bench less than three minutes into the game after junior forward, Franko House ran into early foul trouble.

Calhoun led the Cardinals in scoring with 17 points, while the Panthers’ A.J. Riley led all scorers on the night with 21 of his own, including three 3-point shots.

An area that Whitford has been working on in the offseason was the teams defense. Ball State seems to be responding well to the new philosophy the coaching staff put forward.

Through the first two games, Ball State’s man-to-man defensive scheme is allowing only 55 points per game which includes Bradley scoring 54 in their 1-point win on Nov. 13.

Ball State’s bench contributed 36 points on the night, led by Calhoun and sophomore guard Francis Kiapaway.

Whitford also mentioned that Ryan Weber, a transfer from Youngstown State, will be making his season debut on Nov. 20 at Eastern Kentucky.

“I like our team, I really like where we’re headed,” Whitford said. “I tell my team all the time, you know we say how you build a castle? You build it brick by brick. One brick at a time.”
