Nearly three years after the demolition of a blighted apartment building, members of one of Muncie’s historic districts say they hope a new park built in its place will be a symbol of hope, progress and community development.
A $5,000 grant and several donations, in combination with volunteers, are what made Community Circle possible, according to Brad King, the neighborhood association president.
Two other Muncie neighborhoods are now in the design phase for their own pocket parks. The pocket park program is one of six initiatives enacted by the Neighborhood Investment Committee (NIC).
Three of the programs focus on repurposing vacant lots, while the other three aim to remodel or demolish run-down structures.
There are nearly 4,000 abandoned structures, and 9,000 vacant lots currently in the Muncie community.
