Aiming for amusement, the Homecoming steering committee set the stage for the rest of the week with a circus-themed Homecoming Village.

Catherine Burgess, special events coordinator of the committee, said she wanted to incorporate this year’s theme of "The Greatest Show on Turf" into the celebration. This year, entertainment was the goal.

“I kind of wanted to bring the circus to Muncie so everyone could walk around and stroll and eat popcorn and watch circus acts,” Burgess, a sophomore public relations major, said.

The Cincinnati Circus Company, a traveling entertainment group, performed at the event, bringing stilt walkers, palm readers, magicians, fire performers and aerial acrobats to campus. Free food and games were also available to the attendees.

Bri Barr, a freshman, said she enjoyed the variety of things to do at Homecoming Village.

“I liked how unique it was,” Barr said. “I thought it was interesting and fun that there were all sorts of different activities for everyone to partake in.”

Planning for Homecoming Village began back in February. Burgess said picking a theme revolves around two popular attractions of Homecoming Week.

“We really think about if it could be incorporated into Air Jam and food,” Burgess said. “We really think about activities and then we take the theme and just go with it.”

Burgess said there’s pressure on Homecoming Village to be great, because it’s the first Homecoming event. She said Homecoming Village sets the stage for the rest of the week.

“I am kind of nervous because this is the first event and it kicks off the whole atmosphere and attitude for Homecoming Week,” Burgess said before the event.

Barr said the theme “The Greatest Show on Turf” was well represented at Homecoming Village. She said the event really seemed like a carnival.

“I thought the theme was pretty well incorporated because it was circus-like, and normally circuses have the slogan as ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’” Barr said.
