The Cardinals are now 2-1 on the season.
“It was very important to create offense and come out strong early,” Ball State head coach Craig Roberts said. “We just need to be consistent with that every game.”
Coming off a shutout loss to Lipscomb, Ball State got started in the 11th minute with a goal by freshman Abigail Boswell.
Junior Gabby Veldman followed it up with a goal of her own while falling down in the 17th minute to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage, which it kept for the rest of the first period.
“We have some very exciting players on the offensive side,” Roberts said. “They are very creative in their ways to move upfield and score.”
The Ball State offense has been able to put pressure on opposing goalies so far this season, having at least 10 shots on goal in each match. The Cardinals had several chances in the second half to break it open, but were unsuccessful.
“We were a little too eager," Roberts said. "We just need to be patient with our opportunities."
Wright State closed the gap in the 32nd minute with a header off of a free kick, which was its only real threat of the game.
The Raiders were troubled by the Cardinals' defense, as goalkeeper Alyssa Heintschel saved three of their four shots on goal.
Ball State allowed just three goals in three matches this season.
“The defense did well the majority of the game," Roberts said. "There were some miscues and we can still be more consistent, but overall they played well."
Ball State will hit the road to take on IPFW Aug. 30, the first of five straight matches on the road. The Cardinals will return home on Sept. 25 against Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan.
