What (and what not) to wear this semester

A new semester brings different classes and books—why not a different style? Check out some pieces you should start wearing and which ones you'll be better off leaving at home.

GIRLS

Embrace

1. T-shirt dress

Putting on a dress before early classes may seem like a lot of effort, but slouchy t-shirt dresses are quite the opposite. Throw on this cotton dress and pair it with strappy sandals or sneakers for all-day comfort.

2. Two-piece outfit

Avoid staring blankly into your closet for 15 minutes in the morning by finding a simple two-piece outfit. A crop top and shorts combination is perfect for warmer weather, but you can also carry this look into cooler months with a pant and tunic pairing.

3. Cute sneakers

Sneakers aren’t just for working out anymore. With endless color combinations and patterns, these shoes can be paired with nearly any outfit, especially cuffed jeans or pleated skirts.

Ditch

1. Patterned infinity scarves

Scarves in the winter are one thing, but can be a bit excessive in the warmer months. Instead, try a smaller patterned bandana around the neck for a lighter updated look.

2. Patterned leggings

The obnoxious shapes and colors of patterned leggings can be very overwhelming and limit what items you can pair it with to complete the outfit. Tight fabric with large prints is rarely flattering.Try slouchy pants with a small pattern and a fitted top for a more loungey feel.

GUYS

Embrace

1. Joggers

Guys tend to make comfort their main priority when it comes to fashion, and this item successfully combines comfort and style. The looser fit of the pants makes them easy to move in, and can be worn with a t-shirt or sweatshirt without looking overly casual.

2. Printed button ups

This item can be dressed up with khakis and nice shoes or dressed down with jeans and sneakers. Button up the shirt and roll the sleeves for a put together look.

3. Light jackets

Instead of throwing on a sweatshirt when the weather gets chillier, invest in a light, fall jacket to stand out. Neutral colored jackets work with almost any outfit, and can be layered over other tops to make the look more complex.

Ditch

1. Tall socks with shorts

This look is often worn with boat shoes, which aren’t supposed to be worn with socks anyway. Leave the tall socks for working out.

2. Basketball shorts

Basketball shorts are meant for the gym, not as a substitute for pants. Putting on real shorts isn’t any harder, so step outside your comfort zone.
