University Police warn students of recent burglaries

Safety tips from UPD

  • Lock your doors, when you are home and when you go out.
  • Remember to close and lock your windows before you leave.
  • Keep your grass cut, since an unmown lawn can send a signal to a burglar that you are not around much.
  • If you have a garage door, make sure to keep it closed whenever you are home, day or night.
  • Memorize the phone number of the University Police Department (765-285-1111) or add it to your cell phone contacts.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the police.

Chief of University Police James Duckham sent a mass email Thursday morning to the Ball State community. The message served as a public safety notice to make those living near campus aware of reported burglaries.

University police send these notices to heighten awareness, said Joan Todd, interim associate vice president of University Marketing and Communications. She said electronics are always a popular target for thieves because they are easy to sell on the street.

The burglaries remain under investigation, she said, and no arrests have been made at this time.

In the campus-wide email Duckham reminds, "if you see something, say something."
