Weekend Scores

Game 1: 9-6 (Ball State)

Game 2: 5-4 (Ball State)

Game 3: 15-4 (Ball State)

The Ball State baseball team used an explosive offensive attack as the Cardinals swept the Dayton Flyers in a three-game series over the weekend.

Ball State outscored Dayton 29-14 in the Flyer Classic.

In the first game, Ball State was able to take an early lead with two runs in each of the first three innings. Despite a comeback attempt from Dayton, Ball State put up three more runs in the eighth inning to seal the 9-6 victory.

The Cardinals scored their nine runs on nine hits in the game, including three home runs coming from sophomores Alex Call and Jarrett Rindfleisch as well as senior Elbert Devarie.

Devarie stayed hot at the plate in the second game, going 4-4 with two RBIs.

The Cardinals fell behind 4-1 after five innings and had to use three pitchers during the course of the game. However, the offense put up four runs in the final to innings before giving way to sophomore B.J. Butler to complete the 5-4 victory on the mound in the ninth.

"This team has a lot of grit: we've had some close games this season and we have lost some and won some, but we have always fought to the end," head coach Rich Maloney said. "This team has a lot of grit and that's a good make-up to have."

After the tight second game between the two teams, Ball State used its momentum to score 15 runs on 17 hits en route to a convincing victory over Dayton in game three. The Cardinals scored in six different innings, including eight runs in the first two innings.

Sophomore Alex Maloney scored four of the team's 15 runs. Devarie hit another home run, and five different Ball State batters had two or more hits in the game.

Riding a four-game winning streak, Ball State (11-7) will look to match its recent offensive production as it takes on hosts Rutgers on March 18 before beginning a three-game series with Bowling Green.

"Several player stepped up this week; [Elbert] Devarie [was] 6-11 — a great weekend — [Alex] Maloney had a big game, and [B.J.] Butler did really well for us at the end," head coach Rich Maloney said. "Several guys played several roles, and it was a great team win that we can build on in the future."
