Annual Career Fair draws in more employers

More employers will attend Ball State's annual Cardinal Job Fair this year.

As of Feb. 10, 118 companies had registered for the fair, taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at Worthen Arena.

James Mitchell, associate director for employer relations and recruitment, hopes a higher number of employers will draw even more students.

“Back in 2008 and 2009, the economy really took a hit,” Mitchell said. “In 2008, we had 112 employers. In 2009, we had 87. There was a huge decrease in people who were doing recruiting, and in 2010, it went down even further to 65.”

After last year’s turnout of more than 700 students, the Career Center surveyed the employers about their Cardinal Job Fair experience.

“We asked them questions about how prepared Ball State students are, why they like to recruit at Ball State, how many other schools they recruit at, how many people they plan to hire,” Mitchell said. “We know that employers are impressed by Ball State candidates and we know that students have a good experience.”

According to survey results, one area where students can improve is researching the companies beforehand and preparing good questions.

“We published the guide yesterday and it’s available through Cardinal Career Link,” Mitchell said. “Research which companies are coming to the fair and learn a little bit about them.”

Although most job fair attendees are juniors and seniors, Mitchell says that all students are encouraged to attend as a networking opportunity.
