Historic neighborhood hosts first community yard sale

Residents of a local historic neighborhood held their first community-wide garage sale and reflected on some of the memories behind their possessions .

Liz Riddle, a resident of the Westridge neighborhood, sold an old Polish and Guatemalan hand-woven wall hangings from the 1970s which brought back memories of travel and her vacations all around the world, she said.

Some of the stories attached to the items sold were also passed onto customers. Deborah Foster and her daughter Danielle Phelps sold one lady an antique ice cream machine that brought back childhood memories.

“She said it was just like the old ice cream maker that her mother and her used to have on their porch.” Phelps said

Phelps's said her husband brought the ice cream machine home from work one day.

“My husband used to be a government home inspector, and found the ice cream machine in an abandoned home,” she said. “We looked up the value and a brand new one ran for somewhere around $300, this one needed a bit of work so I couldn’t sell that price for it.

The machine, marked for $50, was negotiated to $40 because the woman didn’t have the money.

“She left for a few minutes and then came back with the money. We were more than happy to sell it to her,” Foster said.

The Muncie Mission made an appearance at the event as well. Yard sale participants were invited to donate any of the items they were unable to sell to the Mission with hope of giving the items a better home.

First time seller, Dennis Bohanon said he was eager and ready to get rid of his items in the name of the neighborhood sale.

“This was my first time participating in a yard sale, so I was ready. The neighborhood had such a simple and easy system in place for the sale, and that helped a lot. It made for a quick way to have a garage sale without worrying about how many people would attend,” he said. “This is the first year for the sale and hopefully it wont be the last.”
