The Panhellenic Council voted on a proposition to raise the minimum number of members sororities need from the current 115 to 125 Sept. 18.

The vote was postponed for two weeks while chapter delegates consulted their national delegates and individual chapters.

“I want chapters and delegates and everyone to be on the same page and stand together,” said Panhellenic Council president Danica Craig.

Standing together proved difficult during the meeting.

Some delegates questioned why the number wasn’t higher  somewhere in the 135 or 136 range.

If raised to 136, six out of 10 PHC chapters would have to begin continuous open bidding to find more members for their sororities, said Kari Murphy, assistant director of student life.

Samantha Coppedge, Sigma Kappa delegate, said that her sorority had finally reached a point this year for the first time in several where it didn’t have to resort to open bidding. She said open bidding was stressful and opposed raising the number of minimum members to 136.

Craig said she appreciated Coppedge’s input.

“My biggest thing is, I want chapters to look at it from everyone’s viewpoint and not necessarily their own,” Craig said. “My biggest preference is an educated vote, a thoughtful vote.”
