Papa John’s will start serving personal-size pizzas, breadsticks and wings in the Atrium by mid-September.

Jon Lewis, director of Dining Services, said once the university was able to send out a purchase order in early August, the process to get the Papa John’s up and running would take about 30 to 35 days.

The pizza place, owned by Ball State alumnus John Schnatter, was originally anticipated to open Aug. 18. Lewis said the pushed back date is not uncommon.

Papa John’s will take the former spot of Sbarro, which closed in mid-May. On May 13, the university’s contract ended with Sbarro after 13 years on campus.

“[Dining Services] thought it was time for a change,” Lewis told the Daily News in May. “We felt like students were asking for a change.”

Until Papa John’s opens, Boar’s Head Deli will continue to offer personal-sized flatbread pizzas and pasta entrees as it did in the summer.According to the university’s contract with Papa John’s, the pizza place should stay in the Atrium until at least 2019.

When the university announced in June that it would bring Papa John’s to the Atrium, some students tweeted to say it was an upgrade from Sbarro.

“Ball State upgraded from Sbarro to Papa John’s in the Atrium. We’re all winners today,” Josiah Shindler, @J_Shindler, tweeted.

Others, like Trisha Givens, were excited but wished the change had happened earlier.

“Darn it Ball State. Why couldn’t you have gotten Papa Johns on campus when I was still had a dining plan? #bitter,” Givens, @trishagivens, tweeted.

Jenna Wise, a senior nursing major, told the Daily News in May that she was excited to see a new pizza shop take Sbarro’s place.

Some, like Wise, hoped for a Cousin Vinny’s or a Greek’s Pizzeria to take over.

Papa John’s owns or franchises about 4,200 restaurants across the United States and in 35 countries, according to its website.
