WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals defeat Western Illinois in season opener

The women's volleyball team defeated the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks by a score of 3-0 in the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge Aug. 29 at Worthen Arena.

The Cardinals are now 1-0 on the new season.

Ball State improved offensively as the match went on. They posted a .245 attack percentage as a team with 38 total kills.

Kelly Hopkins led the match with 10 kills on 17 attacks and only one error. Mackenzie Kitchel posted seven kills, while two other Cardinals had five kills in the match.

Setter Jenna Spadafora led the team with 30 assists. Two Ball State players registered double-digit digs, with Alex Fuelling's 17 and Kati Vasalakis' 13.

Defensively, Ball State held Western Illinois to a .029 attack percentage. They had 9.5 team blocks.

The Cardinals will return to action Aug. 30 as they host Eastern Illinois at 11 a.m. and then Northern Colorado at 8 p.m.
