UPD Chief Gene Burton to retire

Gene Burton

The university's director of public safety and police chief will retire at the end of the month.

Gene Burton's retirement date is July 31, according to a campuswide email sent by Alan Hargarve, associate vice president for student affairs. Burton joined the University Police Department in 1980.

Ball State will begin a national search for a new UPD chief immediately.

The email also announced James Duckham as the new associate director of public safety and UPD assistant chief of police. He will start at the university Aug. 4.

He currently works at Dutchess Community College in New York as its assistant director of campus safety and security. His past police experience includes working as a police officer for the New York Police Department from 1987 to 1990.

Duckham will take over Bob Fey's assistant chief position. Fey retired April 30 after 24 years with UPD.
