Sisters join stand for awareness campaign

Sisters Jenna and Erin Kessler woke up on Friday to stand at the scramble light and get honked at.

Jenna Kessler, a senior nursing major, and Erin Kessler, a freshman nursing major, joined members of the International Justice Mission to take a stand against human trafficking and modern slavery.

The group is standing for 27 hours in honor of the estimated 27 million slaves in the world. The campaign is a part of a national campaign with chapters of IJM participating in similar events in college campuses across the world.

“It’s a cause a lot of people don’t know about because we typically think slavery ended,” Erin Kessler said. “People don’t realize it’s happening. So promoting awareness for it is necessary so we can abolish it.”

Jenna and Erin Kessler held up signs that read “I stand for freedom. What do you stand for?” and “Honk for freedom.”

“Almost everyone [honked for us],” Erin Kessler said. “A large majority of people honked.”

Jenna Kessler is passionate about ending slavery, but is not a member of IJM.

“I just got the email and texted my sister and some other people,” Jenna Kessler said. “I asked, ‘Who wants to do this with me?’”

Anytime Jenna Kessler hears about an IJM event on campus, she tries to participate. She saw a movie about modern slavery and wanted to work to raise awareness when possible.

Jenna and Erin Kessler stood for an hour this morning and plan to return for the final hour ending at 3 p.m.

“We want a lot of people here, it’ll be exciting,” Jenna Kessler said.
