Facing conference opponent Western Michigan, the Ball State baseball team sent ace Scott Baker to the mound for the first of its three game series.

The Broncos got to Baker early, using three consecutive singles to jump out to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

Designated hitter T.J. Weir answered the Broncos’ run in the bottom of the second, sending his third home run of the season over the right field fence.

The score did not stay tied for long, however, as Western Michigan scored once in the third and twice in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

The Cardinals cut the deficit to one in the sixth inning, when Broncos’ shortstop Andrew Sohn threw a routine groundout into right field allowing Brandon Estep and Alex Call to score.

An error by Cardinals’ left fielder Brandon Estep allowed the Broncos two runs, and Western Michigan held on for the 7-3 victory.

Baker took the loss for Ball State, bringing his record to 5-4, and the Cardinals dropped to 9-3 in conference play.

Game two of the series is Saturday at Ball Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
