For three sets, Ball State struggled to find answers for the Lewis onslaught.
The men’s volleyball team dropped its road match against the Flyers (25-14), (25-16), (25-18).
The Cardinals came out flat and maintained their low energy throughout the match, unable to compete with the Flyers on both offense and defense.
Ball State head coach Joel Walton was left searching for answers.
“We were really disrupted by their serve,” he said. “It kept us from running the offense we wanted to and that led to us being put in some pretty bad spots.”
Lewis had seven aces on the night, three from Bobby Walsh. His serves sent Ball State diving, trying to catch up.
Outside attacker Marcin Niemczewski did his best to keep Ball State in the match, but struggled against Lewis’s block. The entire team hit just .091 for the night, with Lewis’ front line standing tall nearly every time Ball State attempted an attack.
Five Cardinals finished with negative attacking percentages.
Ball State’s players weren’t on the same page all night. On numerous points, setter Graham McIlvaine tried to tip the ball backwards to an attacker, but the attacker wasn’t expecting it.
The result was a volleyball falling to the floor.
There was no greater example than when a Lewis attacker accidently sent the ball skyrocketing straight up, just over the net. With two players confused as to who would take it, the ball landed right between two Ball State players.
The loss drops Ball State to 3-2 in conference play.
