Ball State earns conference win over Northern Illinois

With 17 minutes left in Ball State’s game against Northern Illinois on Saturday, Brittany Carter hit a 3-pointer, then a pair of three throws to give Ball State a 31-28 lead.

On the ensuing possession, she found her way in front of a pass, then grabbed it at the most opportune moment.

Carter sprinted across the floor and laid the ball in for a fast break score.

The sophomore guard scored seven straight in a pivotal 64-54 win over Northern Illinois.

“I was honestly thinking ‘Let’s put them away.’, because going into half and being down, I didn’t like that,” Carter said.

Senior Shanee’ Jackson had a career-high 12 rebounds throughout the game.

Ball State coach Brady Sallee called it a “senior playing with a sense of urgency.”

“It was exciting for me to see that out of her,” Sallee said.

Freshman Nathalie Fontaine had trouble defending the bigs of Northern Illinois. They were constantly pushing her out of the post spots.

“Everybody’s bigger than her,” Sallee said. “We’re definitely playing a little bit undersized. The thing they bring to the table is they’re really good at walling off your shot and walking into it as your shooting.”

Sallee said that Fontaine would have to bulk up in the offseason.

“She’s gotta pay rent in the weight room. She’s just gotta live there. Sometimes to convince a kid from Europe that the weight room is an important thing. She understands that.”

Ball State also had a tough time at the free-throw line. It shot 21-of-38 from the foul line for 55.3 percent.

“I don’t know what was going on,” Carter said. “I think we kinda got in our own heads today. Usually we’re not too bad at free throws, but I think we were all caught up in our heads today.”
