WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win in MAC opener

Ball State tops Toledo in three straight sets

A tumultuous first set was enough for Ball State in its first Mid-American Conference match.

After Ball State went into overtime with Toledo in the first set, the Cardinals carried the second and third sets with ease (27-25, 25-16, 25-21).

In the first set, Ball State had set point at 24-19 before allowing Toledo to tie it at 24. Senior outside hitter Kara Bates let out her frustration tied at 25 and hammered home a kill to give Ball State the lead in the first set. Junior setter Jacqui Seidel then targeted Bates for the set winning point.

Bates posted nine kills in the first set. She finished the match with 19 overall.

The second set was all Ball State as Toledo only managed six digs in the set on Ball State's .379 attack percentage.

Ball State rallied in the third set and avoided a letdown at the end similar to the first set.

The team plays Akron at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
