MEN'S GOLF: Ball State's No. 1 golfer named to All-Region team

Merkel was one of six MAC representatives

Sophomore men's golfer Tyler Merkel had a strong season that resulted in a trip to the NCAA Regionals. Now, he's receiving award after award for the season he put together as Ball State's No. 1 golfer.

Merkel was selected to the PING All-Midwest Region Team. The recognition complements his recent selections to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team and Academic All-MAC team.

He was one of six MAC representatives for the team as Kent State paced the conference with four selections.

Merkel finished with an average of 73.47 in 2011-12, an improvement from his average of 74.00 in 2010-11.

He finished the season with four rounds under 70 strokes and had a three round best of 212 in the Northern Intercollegiate to begin the 2011-12 campaign.
