MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals advance to second round

Merkel leads Ball State to win over Ohio, will play NIU next

In the first round of Mid-American Match Play at Lake Jovita Golf Course in Dade City, Fla., the Ball State men's golf team finished with a win over Ohio University 4.5-1.5.

Sophomore Tyler Merkel won his match play 6-5. Senior T.J. Carpenter halved his match with no points for either team. Junior Alex Stinson lost his match 3-4. Junior Joe Gasser won his match play 2-0. Junior Tony Lazzara finished with a 4-3 win in his match play. Finally, junior Brodie Williams came victorious in his match play winning 2-1.

Other teams that were victorious were Northern Illinois over Toledo (4-2), Eastern Michigan over Bowling Green (6-0), and Miami over Akron (OH) (4-2).

Round 2 of the match play event ended up being suspended due to darkness. The only second round match play that was completed gave a win to Eastern Michigan over Akron 3.5-2.5.

The Cardinals, who are hosting the tournament, will continue play tomorrow against Northern Illinois. Currently Ball State and Northern Illinois are tied at 1-1.
