CROSS COUNTRY: Ball State running in Great Lakes Regional

Bishel not expecting any Cardinals to qualify for NCAA Championships

The Ball State cross country team is heading to Toledo, Ohio this Saturday to compete in the Great Lakes Regional. The 6K meet begins at 1:15 p.m. Saturday Nov. 12 at Ottawa Park.

Ball State will bring seven runners to compete for a chance to qualifying for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21.

MaryKate Mellen is Ball State's top runner at this time. Mellen placed 32nd at the Mid-American Conference meet with a time of 22:16

"MaryKate is probably going to be our number one runner this weekend," assistant coach Ali Bishel said.

Christine Talhelm will most likely run behind Mellen after she ran a time of 22:30 at the MAC Championships, placing 35th overall.

"Christine has been our number two runner a few times this season," Bishel said.

Joining Talhelm and Mellen this weekend will be Madeline Goheen, Emilee Zets, Courtney Edon, Allison Blanck and Esther Tirado.

"I think that they have had a really strong showing (this season)," Bishel said.

Bishel does not expect anyone from Ball State to qualify for nationals. Mellen, Ball State's top runner, would have to run about a minute and a half faster than her usual time now to qualify for the national championships.
