MEN'S GOLF: No. 28 Ball State finishes fifth in Florida

Carpenter, Stinson lead team by tying for 14th place

The Ball State men's golf team finished in fifth place after three rounds in the Cobra Puma Invitational at Miromar Lakes Golf Course in Fort Myers, Fla. The team was 12 strokes behind leader Florida Gulf Coast with an 866 for the team.

Florida Gulf Coast won the tournament with an 853.

Senior TJ Carpenter and junior Alex Stinson led the team tied for 14th place stroking a 216, which was par for the entire tournament. Junior Tony Lazzara tied for 29th with a 221 total score.

Rounding out the lineup, sophomore Tyler Merkel, and junior Joe Gasser, tied for 37th both stroking a 224 after the three rounds of tournament play.

The team went into the tournament ranked No. 28, according to the latest Golfstat Poll. Ball State wasn't the only school from the Midwest as Cincinnati, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky and Xavier were also in the field.

Florida Gulf Coast's Brandon Pena and Eastern Kentucky's Billy Peel Jr. finished the tournament tied for first with an overall 206, 10 strokes under par.

The Cardinals' final tournament of the fall season will be the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio on Monday and Tuesday.
