WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State defeats Akron to go 2-0 in MAC

Cardinals reach best record in 15 matches since 1973

The Ball State women's volleyball team notched another victory in its belt Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win at Akron. The triumph improved the Cardinals' record to 13-2, the best it's been since 15 matches into the 1973 season.

Junior outside hitter Kara Bates led Ball State in kills with 16. She now has led Ball State in kills in four straight matches.

Sophomores Kylee Baker and Jacqui Seidel led the match in digs with 16 each.

The Cardinals took the first set 25-18, but dropped the second 20-25 after Akron went on a 10-3 run early in the set, putting Ball State in an early hole that not even Baker and Seidel could dig the team out of.

Losing the second set seemed to make the Cardinals angry. As the Zips quickly learned, Ball State is not the right team to make angry.

The Cardinals outscored Akron 50-24 (25-10, 25-14) in the final two sets to win the match.

Senior Kelsey Brandl led the team with four total blocks. Brandl also had 11 kills and three digs.

With the win, Ball State's MAC record advances to 2-0.

The Cardinals' next opponent is this Friday against Northern Illinois in the John E. Worthen Arena at 7 p.m.
