MEN'S GOLF: Cardinals in 12th after first day of Rio Pinar Invitational

Senior Eric Steger shoots one under through two rounds

The Ball State men's golf team didn't get off to a great start in its fourth tournament of the spring.

After the first two rounds of the Rio Pinar Invitational in Orlando, Fla., the Cardinals are 12th out of 18 teams with a 17-over 593.

Central Florida leads the pack after the first day with a 557 (-19). Liberty stands in second at 570 (-6), while North Carolina State follows in third with a 575 (-1).

Senior Eric Steger leads the Cardinals and is tied for 12th individually with a score of 143 to end the day at one under.

Freshman Tyler Merkel is tied for 38th and posted a 148 (+4). Sophomore Joe Gasser is tied for 48th with an outing of 150 (+6), and junior TJ Carpenter shot a 76 in the first two rounds to end with a 152 (+8). Sophomore Tony Lazzara posted a 159 (+15).

The par-72 final round is scheduled to start at 8:45 a.m. today.
